Getting Up Again

Coming back to school after a busy summer is always a shock to my system. The first shock is being surrounded by so many people. The second shock is when I realize just how much time I spend sitting down.

The school world and my real world are not the same. After my first day back at school which consisted of two, three-hour courses, my body was thoroughly confused. I had not sat down for that long all summer because my work with animals is very active. I am happy to be back advancing in my studies; however, with the amount of lectures and studying in my future, I am in for a lot of sitting.

When there are animals around, no one is sitting. This semester we have what is called a duty week, which is when we work in our onsite school clinic for a week and must accomplish a list of tasks in however much time it takes. I doubt I will be sitting then. Therefore, I am ready for my first out of many duty weeks in the clinic just for the opportunity to move and apply my knowledge in a clinical setting.

Until that moment I will have to find a way to expel my body’s excess active energy, which is what I believe is an issue for many students. We spend so many hours a day working our brain muscles that we forget that we need to move our other muscles.

I have started running, which I hope I can continue. Between that, duty week, and work days I believe I will be able to keep my brain and body active and be able to counteract all the sitting.
