In the field of veterinary medicine, learning is an ongoing endeavor as new studies and findings are occurring on a daily basis. As a student, searching for reputable information is even more of a challenge. As the saying goes “There is an app for that,” and this stands true for the Merck Veterinary Manual app. The Merck Vet Manual phone app is an invaluable tool in studies and in everyday clinical use. The app is free to use, unlike many others of its type. The app has calculators ranging from emergency drug calculators and drug dosages to chocolate toxicity calculators. The chocolate toxicity calculator often comes in handy while I am at work taking phone calls from frightened owners whose pets have come into contact with sweet treats. In the toxicology section is useful information about poisonous houseplants and poisonous mushrooms with descriptions of each. As one can imagine, having this information at hand is crucial to a veterinary practice.
My favorites are the videos which are a godsend to a visual learner like myself. If I am curious about something new the app always seems to have a video on the subject in question. There are also case studies and even quizzes to test your knowledge. One would think a student would be tired of quizzes but adding more to my skillset is a bonus that this app brings. If one is interested in the latest news in veterinary medicine, well there is a tab for that as well, loaded with the latest articles and the newest studies.
The app is extremely user-friendly and very well laid out. These days I seem to be using it often while studying pharmacology as I can search for any drug to learn its mode of action, its effects as well as its side effects. Instead of reaching for a book and fumbling for an answer, I have it right at my fingertips. As a veterinary technician student, I am always seeking to learn more in a time efficient manner; the MVM app never fails to help make that happen.
