We all know people who seem to grasp new concepts and understand them easily. These proverbial unicorns make learning and retaining knowledge look relatively easy. These are the people who pass tests with ease while many others struggle and must endure long hours of study to achieve a similar knowledge base. Being around people such as these can make us question our ability to excel in our chosen area, and even question our intelligence. Let’s face it, we all know one if not more than one of these scholarly unicorns.
I have seen people become disheartened at the amount of work they must put into learning a subject. I have been a witness to others giving up on their educations due to others succeeding with little challenge. There are those who say it is simply too difficult, or that they were not cut out for whatever it is they are attempting to achieve. It saddens me to see people relinquish a dream so readily. It is apparent that at one time, this dream was important enough for them to begin, so why is not important enough to finish?
I am by no means a unicorn; I am more of a sloth prone to distraction. The hats I wear are many, and at times I am spread far too thin. My journey through college is not moving along as fast as I would like it. On the other hand, it is moving, and I am stealing away moments whenever possible to make some headway in my studies. I will take slow over a standstill at any time; I often find myself needing to find tutors, or even finding more resources outside of school.
For the educational sloths like myself, it may take you longer but that time will pass regardless if you are achieving your dreams or just giving up on them. It also is wise to friend that unicorn when you find them as they can be a wealth of knowledge. And just maybe we can all stop comparing ourselves to others for once and focus on our own journey.
